Yogurt vs. Sour Cream in Baking – Which is Better?

Hey y'all,

I get asked all of the time..."Can I use sour cream in your recipes that call for yogurt?"

Many of my recipes call for plain yogurt. However, you can get very similar results using sour cream. So why do I choose to use yogurt?

I choose to make most of my recipes with yogurt because I make my own homemade yogurt in my instant pot. Which makes it a very affordable option for my family.

Once you start making yogurt at home, you can continue making it with milk and a couple scoops of yogurt from your previous batch. Which means I can essentially make a gallon of yogurt for the price of a gallon milk.

So which is actually better tasting in the recipe? The answer depends on what you’re making!

  • Yogurt adds moisture while keeping baked goods light and slightly tangy. It’s perfect for muffins, cakes, and quick breads.
  • Sour cream creates a richer, denser texture, making it ideal for scones, cookies, and indulgent cakes.

If you’re looking for a healthier alternative with extra protein, yogurt is a fantastic choice. And the best part? Did I mention you can make your own creamy, delicious yogurt at home with an Instant Pot?

Today, I wanted to share with you my go-to method for making homemade yogurt, plus a few of my favorite yogurt-based recipes:
